From Preface:
This book is intended as a text for a first course in the theory of algebraic
numbers. Accordingly, we have decided to maintain a very unsophisticated
point of view and a rather elementary level throughout. It is our hope that
the students will appreciate this beautiful branch of mathematics and then
turn to more advanced books on the subject, either in the classical or in the
more modern presentations.
The material included in this volume has been recently taught at Queen's
University, for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students. From
our experience, this approach proves very successful toward a well-motivated
introduction of many concepts in algebra.
As main prerequisites for this course, we assume a general knowledge of
basic concepts in algebra, including Galois theory, and the elementary
properties of rings, ideals, and fields. For convenience, we have preceded the
text by an Introduction, where the main definitions and pertinent facts are
included.
